Reflections

What were your initial thoughts or expectations about using ChatGPT and inquiry-based learning in this course?

: At first, I was surprised that Dr. Sherry would allow us to use ChatGPT in our writing since I thought that would make the whole course much easier. I am also a bit worried, because I expected this course to be difficult, and I thought maybe even AI could not help me with the assignments. As for inquiry-based learning, my previous writing professor did the exact thing in my English Composition I and II, so I have an overall vision of what that might look like.

How has your perception of inquiry-based learning and ChatGPT changed throughout the course?

: I think inquiry-based learning is the part that really assisted me with my writing. Having blind spots is one of the biggest issues in my writing, and I think peer reviews and suggestions from teachers helped me improve my writing. For the aspect of using ChatGPT, it did help me with my writing, yet it has its limits, such as being too wordy or using too complicated vocabulary. Apart from that, the survey research that we are conducting has to be precise, and that is something ChatGPT could not do. I ended up doing a lot of the work by myself, for that would be more effective.

Reflect on a specific instance where inquiry-based learning or ChatGPT helped improve your writing performance. How did this experience impact your learning?

: When my initial topic "Analyzing the Impact of Restrictive Abortion Laws on Women's Rights in the U.S." was dismissed, I was a bit lost since that was the only topic I was interested in. With no inspiration, I asked ChatGPT about some of the relevant issues in Taiwan. It provided me with a few topics and "Taiwanese traditional parenting on teens' mental health" was one of them, and it stood out to me because I know several friends that had traumas due to their families. After polishing the title, it became my new topic, and I was satisfied with it.

What challenges did you face when engaging in inquiry-based learning or using ChatGPT? How did you overcome these challenges?

: Since this course requires students to use ChatGPT, I have been using it a lot more than usual, and sometimes I can be slightly addicted to using AI to write my essays. My solution is to try to write a draft that might have imperfections, and use ChatGPT for the polishing part only. That way, I would not be relying on AI too much.

Overall, how do you think the integration of inquiry-based learning and ChatGPT has influenced your writing skills and overall learning experience?

: I think these methods made the learning experience better. Especially for inquiry-based learning, it provided me with reviews and suggestions from others and made my essay more readable. For ChatGPT, this course teaches me to train AI to get the outcome I want, making it a more effective tool.
